This film has been in-the-making for a few months now and it\u2019s one that is dear to our hearts. We\u2019ve been in love with this sto\u00adry from the first time we hit record on our cam\u00aderas back in August to just over a week ago when Kali and Edward tied the knot at the Art Gallery of Ontario and we put the final pieces of this puz\u00adzle togeth\u00ader into a same-day edit for them. This is a film that we\u2019re over-the-top excit\u00aded to share and one that per\u00adfect\u00adly rep\u00adre\u00adsents our phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy when it comes to wed\u00adding cin\u00ade\u00admatog\u00adra\u00adphy, so it would only make sense for us to back\u00adtrack a bit and share a lit\u00adtle bit about our process lead\u00ading up to the final piece.<\/p>\n

We first met Kali in July over an iced cof\u00adfee in Leslieville. It was\u00adn\u2019t long before we learned that both her and Edward live by some pret\u00adty busy sched\u00adules span\u00adning a cou\u00adple of con\u00adti\u00adnents and a hand\u00adful of coun\u00adtries and, because of that, Edward could\u00adn\u2019t make that first meet\u00ading. But it was\u00adn\u2019t lack of inter\u00adest. Actu\u00adal\u00adly, Kali told us that Edward was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic about videog\u00adra\u00adphy \u2014 maybe a lit\u00adtle more than she was \u2014 and that she con\u00adnect\u00aded with our work main\u00adly because it was\u00adn\u2019t cheesy, or con\u00adtrived, or even very \u201cwedding\u2011y\u201d (we\u2019re mak\u00ading that a word). The more we talked, the more we real\u00adized we were a per\u00adfect fit. She real\u00adly just want\u00aded their sto\u00adry told and, from what we gath\u00adered, we would have some beau\u00adti\u00adful venues and set\u00adtings to work in. Our only task was to make a film that would\u00adn\u2019t make Kali roll her eyes, but that would be easy enough.<\/p>\n\"Muskoka\"Muskoka\"Muskoka \"Cottage\" \"Muskoka \"Bride \"kaliedward-8\"\n

We heard back from them a cou\u00adple of days lat\u00ader and, as Kali had guessed, Edward want\u00aded a same-day edit with a por\u00adtrait shoot, which they decid\u00aded should be at her cot\u00adtage in Musko\u00adka. We were imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly excit\u00aded since we had already heard so much about the cot\u00adtage by this point and knew it\u2019d be the per\u00adfect back\u00addrop for their sto\u00adry. Not only was it their get\u00adaway from their hec\u00adtic pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal lives, but it was also the place where Edward pro\u00adposed to Kali \u2014 the for\u00admer wear\u00ading a tuxe\u00addo and wait\u00ading cool\u00adly for her at the docks, the lat\u00adter sport\u00ading sweat\u00adpants and crash\u00ading a boat onto said dock.<\/p>\n\"Muskoka \"Kali\n\n

We had to move fast to shoot in August just before Kali moved off to the UK, giv\u00ading us just under two weeks to get to know the two and put a plan togeth\u00ader for their entire por\u00adtrait shoot. We all worked fast, Kali and Edward answer\u00ading our grow\u00ading list of ques\u00adtions, and us iron\u00ading out a con\u00adcept that made sense with the tid\u00adbits we were get\u00adting from their sto\u00adry. In the end, we decid\u00aded to con\u00adtrast sequences of the shoot at the cot\u00adtage with ele\u00adments from their wed\u00adding day, draw\u00ading a par\u00adal\u00adlel between the two while con\u00adtrast\u00ading the relaxed cot\u00adtage atmos\u00adphere with the busy\u00adness of the city (not too unlike Kali and Edward\u2019s every\u00adday lives).<\/p>\n\"Muskoka\n

The one image that real\u00adly stuck out in our heads when we first imag\u00adined the piece was a smooth shot of the cot\u00adtage slow\u00adly com\u00ading into view from the lake as the cam\u00adera approach\u00ades it \u2014 it would not only estab\u00adlish the entire set\u00adting but com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcate its impor\u00adtance visu\u00adal\u00adly. With the help of the Movi, we were able to get just that on the boat ride in. Once there, we real\u00adly just want\u00aded to cap\u00adture the essence of the cot\u00adtage and what it is Kali and Edward love about it. This is one project where we prob\u00ada\u00adbly used every sin\u00adgle piece of gear we own. We were so inspired by every\u00adthing around us that we could\u00adn\u2019t stop rolling. We braved head-to-toe mos\u00adqui\u00adto bites as we trekked through the for\u00adest, not to men\u00adtion a pret\u00adty scary encounter with a rat\u00adtlesnake, but we did\u00adn\u2019t care too much \u2014 it was all look\u00ading amaz\u00ading and, more impor\u00adtant\u00adly, it was the kind of adven\u00adture Kali and Edward like to take on and we want\u00aded to cap\u00adture that.<\/p>\n\"Four \"Downtown \"Wedding \"Bride\" \"Groom\" \"Cuff\n

Fast-forward four months to their wed\u00adding day and to an entire\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent set\u00adting. This was our last wed\u00adding of the 2014 sea\u00adson and it was a beau\u00adti\u00adful note to end the year on. It was a day filled with laugh\u00adter, joy, plen\u00adty of jokes, and some pret\u00adty emo\u00adtion\u00adal moments here and there that would catch us all off-guard. We filmed the most jaw-dropping chore\u00ado\u00adgraphed first dance we\u2019ve ever wit\u00adnessed and pre\u00adsent\u00aded their same-day edit a few hours after that.<\/p>\n\"Art \"AGO \"AGO\n

It feels like we always say how amaz\u00ading it is to show an same-day edit and see every\u00adone\u2019s reac\u00adtions in-person as we show the film, but that was spe\u00adcial\u00adly true this time around. We were hon\u00adest\u00adly so excit\u00aded to show the film and were so incred\u00adi\u00adbly hum\u00adbled to see the hall burst into laugh\u00adter at all the right points and to hear the roar\u00ading applause at the end. We love what we do and we put so much work into the tini\u00adest details, obsess\u00ading over the per\u00adfec\u00adtion of every shot, every cut, every tran\u00adsi\u00adtion. These moments make us real\u00adize why we do it, why it\u2019s impor\u00adtant to cap\u00adture these sto\u00adries, and why it\u2019s impor\u00adtant to keep striv\u00ading for per\u00adfec\u00adtion.
